Biomechanics and Physical Stanislavsky Workshops

In conjuction with our performances of The Master Builder, Theatre Novi Most is offering two separate workshops training in our physical theatre methods. TNM Co-Artistic Director Vladimir Rovinsky will teach master classes in Biomechanics and Physical Stanislavsky. Information about both workshops is below.

BIOMECHANICS
Saturday, April 15, 5-6:30pm
The heart of the method is a study of five etudes or series of physical positions, which string together to tell a story. The etudes require intense concentration and awareness as the actor moves through a series of still pictures with synchronization of body parts, negotiating a verity of time signatures and rhythms within the body.

Goals and benefits for students who work in Biomechanics include increased physical awareness, practical understanding of theatricality in the moving body, use of body for storytelling, learning about psychophysical energy through application of rhythm, coordination of body, precision of movement and expansion of physical expressiveness.

PHYSICAL STANISLAVSKY
Sunday, April 16, 5-6:30pm
Vladimir will introduce participants to the “method of physical actions,” one of Stanislavsky’s later experiments that never fully traveled to the U.S. but is a central facet of the training in Russia. It was his belief that actors must build a role from a physical chain of actions or events.
During workshop, participants will explore use of inner monologue and subtext, physicalizing of communication, and building of character’s line of physical actions.

Each workshop is $10, or $15 for both.
ARTshare members pay $5/workshop.

To sign up or with any questions, please email Jared Zeigler at jaredzeigler1@gmail.com and indicate which workshop(s) you would like to register for.

THE MASTER BUILDER

In April, we return to The Southern Theater for our first of two ARTshare productions in 2017. After last year’s The Seagull, we are continuing to reimagine classic works with a new production of Ibsen’s The Master Builder, directed and adapted by Theatre Novi Most co-founder Vladimir Rovinsky. We are delighted to work  with many familiar Novi Most artists and also have new faces join the team. Pearce Bunting (Rehearsing Failure, The Seagull) plays Halvard Solness with Barbra Berlovitz (Oldest Story, Rehearsing Failure, The Seagull) as his wife, Aline, Shelby Richardson (The Seagull) as Hilda, and Alex Barreto Hathaway as the Troll. Designers include sound by Kalen Keir (The Seagull), lights by Heidi Eckwall (Rehearsing Failure) and Josie Everett on costumes.  Deb Ervin (The Oldest Story in the World) returns as our beloved stage manager. The Master Builder plays from April 14-22.

DANCING ON THE EDGE

Our second ARTshare production will be the world premiere of Adam Kraar’s Dancing on the Edge. This brand new bilingual play tells the story of the passionate romance between American dance artist Isadora Duncan and Russian poet Sergei Esenin. We follow the couple as they meet in Russia and travel the world, communicating through art rather than language. Lisa Channer and Sasha Andreev star as Duncan and Esenin with an additional ensemble of two and a children’s chorus of dancers to join. First commissioned in 2011, Dancing on the Edge is the culmination of 6 years of “slow art” development in Minneapolis and New York City. Minneapolis audiences have one weekend only, September 7-9, to see this brand new play before we go on the road.

TOUR

After the Minneapolis premiere, Theatre Novi Most will tour Dancing on the Edge. We are planning stops in Chicago, New York City, and Upstate New York throughout Fall 2017, reaching new audiences and exploring future touring possibilities.

COMMUNITY

Over the summer, we will partner with Young Dance to bring Jeanne Bresciani, director of the Isadora Duncan International Institute, to Minneapolis for a week long dance camp session for children featuring the Isadora Duncan technique. Many of these children will be featured in the premiere of Dancing on the Edge as the children of the school Isadora Duncan founded in Russia. Jeanne is one of the world’s leading experts on Duncan and also the choreographer for Dancing on the Edge, providing a rare opportunity for Minneapolis children and adults to experience a master class with this renowned artist.

We have also deepened our partnership with The Museum of Russian Art. After last summer’s reading of The Seagull, we held a one-night only reading of Turgenev’s A Month in the Country in March and will follow this with a staged reading of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya later this spring.
