Theatre Novi Most to Participate in The Ghostlight Project

On Thursday Jan. 19th at 5:30pm in each time zone, theater venues and performance spaces across the country will come together to launch The Ghostlight Project, affirming their inclusive values and lighting a beacon of hope across the country to signal that affirmation.
Inspired by the tradition of leaving a “ghost light” on in a darkened theater, artists and communities will make or renew a pledge to stand for and protect the values of inclusion, participation, and compassion for everyone–regardless of race, class, religion, country of origin, immigration status, (dis)ability, gender identity, or sexual orientation.] Over 20 theaters in the Twin Cities are joining together for this event in locations across the metro area. Theatre Novi Most will be participating at an event held on campus at the University of Minnesota Department of Theatre Arts and Dance from 5:20-6:00pm.

Gather: at 5:20 gather in front of the Thrust Theater in the Rarig Center (330 21st Ave S). Bring phones and/or flashlights. Tea lights available will also be available thanks to the UMTAD Peers.

At 5:30pm exactly, led by event MCs, we will process into the Thrust theater and together light our lights. The Peers will lead us in an inclusive pledge to craft continuous brave spaces in our department. Faculty and students from Theater and Dance will lead us in the ceremony, in movement and in song. We will then process to the Barker Center to affirm our commitment and light a beacon in this space as well.

At 6pm: All are welcome to join folks from Augsburg, Mixed Blood and the Guthrie at the Republic (221 Cedar Ave.)

All are welcome. More info at https://theghostlightproject.com/

Announcing Our 2017 Season

LOOKING BACK ON 2016

In 2016 Theatre Novi Most is proud to have produced a variety of new works here and on tour

In August 2016, we produced TOO PUNK TO CARE in collaboration with University of Minnesota students at the Minnesota Fringe Festival; in March we presented our highly acclaimed production of THE SEAGULL by Anton Chekhvov directed by Vladimir Rovinsky at the Southern Theatre as part of ARTShare; in March we were also happy to present workshops in Michael Chekhov acting techniques with visiting Russian master teacher ELENA KUZINA and were honored to be part of the BRECHT / WEILL FESTIVAL at the Southern Theatre performing excerpts from the English language premiere of FATZER by Bertolt Brecht. Finally, in June Lisa Channer’s original performance RANT was invited to perform at the FURY FACTORY FESTIVAL OF ENSEMBLE THEATRE in San Francisco CA.
We were grateful for the support of the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, The Southern Theatre, The University of Minnesota and most of all, our audiences, artists and donors.

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2017

In 2017 Theatre Novi Most will present a full season that includes a major bilingual world premiere, a new adaptation of a European classic and a Russian play reading series in collaboration with the The Museum of Russian Art.
THE MASTER BUILDER by HENRIK IBSEN – APRIL 10-23, 2017

Adapted by Vladimir Rovinsky
Produced as part of ARTShare at the Southern Theatre
Cast features Pearce Bunting, Barbra Berlovitz and Shelby Richardson

This play by the legendary Norwegian writer is highly charged with secret desires, stunning poetic language, Freudian and Nietzschean motives and… there are those “trolls”.
DANCING ON THE EDGE by ADAM KRAAR – SEPT 2017
The cast includes Theatre Novi Most co-founder Lisa Channer in the role of Isadora Duncan and Twin Cities based actor Sasha Andreev as her Russian husband, the poet Sergei Esenin.

Directed by Vladimir Rovinsky, this bilingual play tells the story of the tumultuous pairing in 1920 of two of that era’s most fascinating artists. Created with the support of the Isadora International Institute in NY, the play includes live piano music and Duncan dances set by IDII artistic director, Jeanne Bresciani. DOTE will tour to New York next fall after it’s Minneapolis premiere. (exact date and location TBD)

RUSSIAN PLAYREADING SERIES – FEB and MAY 2017
TNM is proud to begin a regular Russian play reading series in collaboration with The Museum of Russian Art featuring professional Twin Cities actors. Play title announced in January.

Please give if you can to help support these projects and the artists who make them happen.

The Reviews Are Coming In (and They’re Great!)

The reviews of our latest production are beginning to come in and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Here’s what some have had to say:

“American audiences are used to seeing Chekhov’s characters leading lives of quiet desperation. Rovinsky, however, gives us people leading lives of loud desperation in an attempt to capture the humor and humanity that makes these 19th-century strivers still beloved to their latter-day Russian descendants.”

Jay Gabler, City Pages

“You won’t want to miss this twist on the Russian classic which disengages the play from the clichés of samovars, corsets, and the “mysterious Russian soul” and instead addresses our contemporary world of disconnection and the desperate longing for love that is our seething, vibrating underbelly.”

Savage Umbrella

“This is one of those shows that is so completely captivating that it’s hard to shake when you leave the theater. Funny, tragic, odd, and completely enchanting.”

Cherry and Spoon

“If you have not seen The Seagull before, this is the perfect version to see. If you think you know it well and don’t need to see it again, this is the one that will prove you wrong. Don’t miss it.”

Bethany Gladhill
